The Puritans

Some of the characteristics, and facts about the religious group that inhabited the Salem, Massachusetts colony are;

  • They believed that they were chosen by God for a special purpose.

  • They were required to go to church frequently, or they would be accused of worshipping the devil.

  • Some of their characteristics were rigid, extremely religious, and very hard working.

  • They believed that any misfortune (disease, drought etc.) was work of the devil.

  • With what they could not explain, their strong belief in the devil (reasons listed above) helped them explain things that they did not understand and could not explain.

  • They had a strong belief that witches prayed on the weakest, and most vulnerable beings in the universe. At this time, it was believed that the weakest beings of the universe were women, children, and slaves. Because of this, these people were some of the first to be accused of being witches, and practicing satanic behaviours.
