Personal Reflections

Beside is a collage I created that depicts the different aspects I thought were key in the book. I thought that the setting and the clothing were a key aspect when I envisioning it. I wanted to create a collage that embodied the type of pictures in thought of when interpreting the book. I also included things like color scheme and architecture. Overall I think that my collage truly depicts my idea on how I interpreted the story, setting, and characters.

In the Crucible, the antagonist is Abigail Williams. Abigail williams lusts over John Proctor who is the Protagonist. The main reason I feel she started accusing innocent people including john proctor's wife is because she is in love with him. Throughout the book, abigail has this ignite thought that one day her affair with john Proctor will become into something more. She believes that he loves her, but as we come to find out he doesn't. Overall I believe she does this in spite of hurting john Proctor's wife and to protect her own identity even though she is guilty.

After reading the book, I believe that the most common mood would have to be superstition and hysteria. The idea of change or abnormality in such a small religious town created an uproar when the word of witchcraft was relieved to the public. Along with the mood created darkness, tension, and mysteriousness especially in the characters such as Abigail, Proctor and hale due to the fact that we didn't know if they were lying or telling the truth at times. Looking into the logistics, I think that Arthur Miller created this mood by using foreshadowing, imagery, and flashbacks to create such darkness and tension within the scenes.

Here below is a sketch of a costume design for both men and women. This is usual attire of this time period for Puritans. The normal color scheme of clothing was usually dark greys, greens, greys, and browns.

At the beginning of the book, Arthur Miller includes a chapter called “A Note on the Historical Accuracy of This Play”. He did this in order to explain to the reader that The Crucible is not an accurate representation of the true events of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. He continued by saying that his intention of the book was to not rewrite history but create a play that depicted the fates and circumstances of many people during this time as well as completing the reader with added-in drama.
